About Ajanta Caves

The Ajanta Caves are about 29 rock-cut Buddhist cave monuments which date from the 2nd century BCE to about 480 or 650 CE in Aurangabad district of Maharashtra state of India. The caves include paintings and rock cut sculptures described as among the finest surviving examples of ancient Indian art, particularly expressive paintings that present emotion through gesture, pose and form.

Distance From Railway Station

The nearest railway station for reaching Ajanta Caves is Jalgaon 60 Kilometers (37 Miles) or you can get a railway from Aurangabad Railway station, 120 Kilometer (74 Miles). Both of these railway stations are well connected to major cities in India.

Distance From Airport

You can not directed reach Ajanta by Air. But the distance of Aurangabad airport to Ajanta is 102 Kilometers (or 63 Miles). You can easily travel this distance via car in around 2 – 2.5 hours.

How to Reach Ajanta Caves by Bus

You can easily get bus to Ajanta Caves from Central bus station or Cidco Bus station in Aurangabad. It will take around 2 – 2.5 hours for you to reach Ajanta Caves from Aurangabad.

Best time to visit

July To February is the best time to visit Ajanta Caves. This time period is Rainy and Winter season. If you visit Ajanta during this period you get a good view of nature at best. If you don’t mind heat and temperature, then you can visit Ajanta in off season too.
